Workshop on How Zinc is Used in HDG

| Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, Colorado

About the Event

The Workshop on How Zinc is Used in Hot-Dip Galvanizing will be held May 8, 2023. The workshop is organized by ASTM Committees A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products and B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys, and will be held at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, Colorado in conjunction with the standards development meetings of the committee. The language of the workshop will be English.

Objective and Scope

This workshop will provide a forum for members of both committees to better understand the mutually beneficial relationship between A05 and B02.04. The presentations will include the reasons behind the need for so many different levels of aluminum in B852 zinc, and what are the refining and production methods, quality control requirements, and practices used to produce the zinc and zinc alloys used for both continuous and general galvanizing.

Topics for this workshop include:

  • Ore to zinc process and methods to remove unwanted residual elements
  • Zinc ingot production for continuous and general galvanizing
  • Zinc alloys for hot-dip galvanizing – Zn-5% Al, Zn-Al-Mg
  • Review of continuous galvanizing bath arrangement and constituents
  • Why multiple Al levels in B842 are needed and how it's used by CGL lines
  • Review of reasons for restricted lead in B852 zinc
  • Short review of Zn-5% Al and Zn-Al-Mg metallurgy
  • Production of HDG articles: bath chemistry, effect of steel chemistry on coating, coating weight and appearance

AGA's Technical Director Alana Fossa will be speaking at this workshop.
