Is Hot-Dip Galvanizing a Suitable Corrosion Protection System for Data Centers?

As demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital storage, and high-speed connectivity continues to grow, data centers have become some of the most critical infrastructure assets in the modern economy. These facilities require reliable building systems and durable materials capable of performing for decades with minimal maintenance and risk of disruption.

Rapid growth in data center construction has demonstrated the value of hot-dip galvanized steel, a well-known and proven solution for other industrial buildings and infrastructure projects. Many of the industry's earliest large-scale facilities incorporated galvanized steel to achieve long-term corrosion protection while minimizing both cost and future maintenance requirements. Because data centers share many of the same design and performance requirements as other common industrial and infrastructure projects, engineers and specifiers frequently select hot-dip galvanizing as a familiar, proven solution for protecting steel. One of the defining characteristics of today's data center construction market is speed. Owners, developers, and contractors are under increasing pressure to shorten design and construction schedules to bring facilities online as quickly as possible. Fortunately, many steel fabrications used in modern data centers are highly compatible with the hot-dip galvanizing process.

Many data center steel components are fabricated using straightforward and standardized designs that can be hot-dip galvanized easily with little design fabrication modifications required. For example, server enclosure designs only require the addition of small venting and drainage holes at the lowest/highest points of the enclosure when it is oriented for dipping. Some data center engineers have even worked with galvanizers during the design phase to ensure best practices are followed during design and fabrication. This undoubtedly reduces delays and improves coating quality.
