Engineers and specifiers are often tasked with ensuring galvanized steel is properly inspected and meets all applicable requirements. In an effort to be thorough, some project specifications reference ASTM E376 as a substitute for ASTM A123, or mistakenly treat ASTM E376 as an inspection specification for galvanized steel.

While ASTM E376 is an important standard, it is not a galvanizing specification, it is not a quality acceptance standard, and it cannot replace the sampling and inspection requirements of ASTM A123. Understanding the distinction between these documents can help avoid conflicting requirements and ensure galvanized steel is evaluated correctly.

The Purpose of ASTM A123

ASTM A123/A123M, Standard Specification for Zinc (Hot-Dip Galvanized) Coatings on Iron and Steel Products, is the governing product specification for steel hot-dip galvanized after fabrication.

ASTM A123 establishes:

  • Minimum coating thickness requirements
  • Coating weight requirements
  • Finish and appearance criteria
  • Inspection Requirements
  • Acceptance and rejection criteria
  • Repair requirements

The specification already contains a complete inspection framework, including procedures for selecting samples, evaluating coating thickness, and determining acceptance of a lot. A separate inspection standard is not needed because the inspection requirements are already built into ASTM A123.

The Purpose of ASTM E376

ASTM E376, Standard Practice for Measuring Coating Thickness by Magnetic-Field or Eddy-Current (Electromagnetic) Examination Methods, serves a very different purpose. ASTM E376 explains the proper use of magnetic coating thickness gauges. It provides guidance on obtaining accurate readings and minimizing measurement error. Topics include:

  • Gauge calibration and verification
  • Probe positioning
  • Measurement locations
  • Edge and corner effects
  • Curved surfaces
  • Best practices for obtaining reliable measurements

Simply stated:

ASTM A123 tells you whether the galvanized coating meets specification requirements.

ASTM E376 tells you how to properly use the instrument that measures coating thickness.

Why ASTM E376 Cannot Replace ASTM A123

One of the most common misconceptions is that compliance with ASTM E376 demonstrates compliance with ASTM A123. The inspector must still apply the requirements of ASTM A123 to determine:

  • How many test articles must be examined
  • How specimens are defined
  • What minimum average coating thickness is required
  • Whether the lot passes or fails

Without ASTM A123, there is no basis for acceptance or rejection of the galvanized product.

ASTM E376 Is Not an Inspection Specification

Some project specifications contain wording such as: "Galvanized steel shall be inspected in accordance with ASTM E376." While the statement appears reasonable, ASTM E376 is a measurement practice, not an inspection specification. It does not contain sampling plans or acceptance criteria.
