Summary
Hot-dip galvanizing is often looked at as a commodity product intended to be run at high volume and throughput to maximize return. However, when galvanizing Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) projects, the galvanizer must change his or her mindset and process to minimize appearance imperfections and smoothing. The established guidelines in the AISC/CISC cost matrices clearly establish specifiers pay a premium for the additional work and process alterations AESS projects require. So, when employed effectively, galvanizers will find it is not only possible to capitalize on AESS projects, but in certain markets it may also be a preferred business practice.
