Connection Concerns
Utilizing hot-dip galvanized fasteners for both bearing and friction type connections is a very effective way to provide corrosion protection. In addition to overtapping/oversizing to allow for the zinc coating thickness, there are additional considerations when specifying bolted hot-dip galvanized structural joints for steel bridge design. By taking into account oversizing allowances, tensioning, and slip coefficients as they relate to hot-dip galvanized connections, it is possible to ultimately save time and money down the road by simplifying bridge design and installation.
