Lane Stadium is home to the Virginia Tech Hokies football team and seats approximately 66,000 fans. It is known for having one of the most exciting entrances in college football and being one of the loudest stadiums in the country, thus providing the best home field advantage.
There was no question that HDG would provide the greatest advantage for corrosion protection.
The stadium has been in a constant state of improvement and keeps the budget at a minimum by using resources such as hot-dip galvanized steel for the new hand rails installed throughout the stadium. There was no question that HDG would provide the greatest advantage for corrosion protection, given its proven durability to various dents and dings often incurred by recreational equipment.
Since the stadium is an open air stadium, the handrails also required a coating that could withstand various weather related elements, including freezing temperature and humid conditions. Hot-dip galvanizing provides corrosion protection both inside and outside the handrail; because the HDG coating is harder than the steel itself, due to the zinc iron alloy layers, performance will be longer than any painted system.
Another reason the decision was made to galvanize the rails was because the coating will remain maintenance free throughout its life-cycle, allowing this stadium to be enjoyed by decades of future Hokies fans.
