Previously rebuilt twice during its existence of only 40 years, the Salt Dock in Calvert City, Kentucky is the unloading place for salt vessels from all over the nation. Its short life is due to the extreme corrosiveness of the salt dock and inadequate paint protection. Salt attracts the water needed for the corrosion process.
With plenty of water around the location, the dock is a premier site for corrosion. When it was time to maintain the dock, the coating durability of hot-dip galvanized (HDG) was the only choice. Nothing but HDG could take on the task of protecting this dock. The components galvanized include the flat web sheet pilings encircling existing cells, pipe piles, stair tower, and bridge of the dock. The dipping process of sheet piling is difficult; however, it was expertly executed by the galvanizer. With HDGs unbeatable corrosion protection, the rehabilitators of the Salt Dock are confident the dock will not require any maintenance for many years even in this highly corrosive environment.
