There were two challenges during construction of this project. The air intake system needed to operate at all times throughout construction. This meant that during construction there could be no downtime. Even though Minnesota isn't always under winter-weather conditions, construction during the bitterly cold periods was a special challenge.
Both of these issues would have been cause to halt the project had hot-dip galvanizing not been specified for all the structural steel and 500 tons (454 tonnes) of air piping. Because of hot-dip galvanizing's turnaround time, crews were able to work around the clock, and because hot-dip galvanizing isn't dictated by the weather, protected steel was delivered on time.
The Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant is one of the largest treatment plants on the Mississippi River. Adjacent to the project are acres of wastewater treatment tanks open to the atmosphere. Both galvanized steel and painted steel were considered, due to the high moisture and highly corrosive atmosphere at this location. However, due to cost and ease of construction, hot-dip galvanizing was specified.
