The Kortright Center for Conservation recently added a spectacular centerpiece. The Living Machine is an innovative biological ecosystem that simulates a natural wetland to treat domestic waste sewage generated daily in the Kortright's existing Visitor Center.
The Living Machine is appropriately housed in a 2,900 ft2 (270 m2) world-class pre-engineered steel and glass building, with substantial southern exposure that melds ultra-efficient design and solar and earth energy technologies to demonstrate the latest in water and energy conservation, resource recycling and alternative waste water treatment. Galvanizing ensures the durability of the Center's steel structure. The building's potential for corrosion is significant due to the high humidity greenhouse interior and damp exterior conditions. Temperature extremes in this rural setting made minimizing the cost of building maintenance a major consideration. Because of hot-dip galvanizing's low maintenance requirement, this was the logical corrosion prevention system for the engineers and owners to utilize.
