The truss units are constructed of 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm) tubular material that tapers at the ends to section 1 in. (2.5 cm) in diameter. These sections are then bolted together to form the finished truss. With tubular material, it was critical to protect the internal surfaces from corrosion.
The galvanized steel at the Aspinwall Water Treatment Plant is used to cover the clarifier. This cover is comprised of 450+ tons (408 tonnes) of galvanized steel. The clarifier removes undesirable biological and chemical contents from the raw water. Chemicals such as chlorine, alum, lime, permanganate, clay, coagulant, and carbon are added to this raw water. Based on coating inspection at the time of construction and every other year after that, the clarifier will provide as many as 50 years of service before first maintenance is required.
