Surrounded by the Mt Baker National Forests, the Sauk River Bridge rests over water adorned with lush vegetation. The wild Sauk River is home to endangered species and in order to protect the surrounding inhabitants, the replacement bridge was powder coated after hot-dip galvanized (HDG). The duplexed coating provides the much needed corrosion protection, protecting both the structure and its environment.
When under construction, both the reinforcing steel in the bridge deck and the structural steel in the bridge truss were all galvanized. This choice ensured every piece of rebar inside the concrete received the same corrosion protection, as the bridge receives nearly continual condensation. The synergistic effect of duplex system ensures the Sauk River Bridge and the environment are preserved.
