In this day and age, facilities can both reflect and determine the prestige of the athletic programs that call them home. The Louisiana State University soccer team competes at the NCAA Division I level, and the athletic department sought to upgrade the stadium to a level that illustrates their commitment to achieving first class programs across all sports. Prior to the new construction, fans were relegated to temporary bleachers and makeshift concession stands.
Now, over 2,100 spectators can enjoy the LSU soccer experience in a facility much more indicative of the prowess of the university. The aluminum bleacher benches are supported by HDG stringers and support columns, and all pipe handrail received a duplex coating. The decision by the designers was simple, as the preservation of the facility as well as the appearance could not be maintained effectively with other coatings.
Thousands of fans attend soccer games at LSU annually, and the safety of those patrons was at the forefront of decisions were made regarding corrosion protection. The pipe handrails must withstand not only weather and environmental factors, but repeated human contact as well. The fact that HDG was able to protect both the interior and exterior of the rail made it an easy sell for the designers. Additionally, the galvanized surface was easily profiled to receive paint, and the resulting duplex coating will increase the lifespan of both the HDG and paint coatings. The stringers and support structure serve as an excellent backdrop to highlight the handrail throughout the stadium and they also blend well with the aluminum benches. The aesthetic appeal of the stadium sat among the top priorities for the design team, and HDG played a major role in the final appearance as well as in bringing the LSU Soccer program to unprecedented heights among competitors.
