Hot-dip galvanized steel was specified for all of the fencing and grandstand structure at the University of Cincinnati Soccer Stadium because of its corrosion performance. Ohio can have very harsh winters, and the University had previously had bad experiences with other materials corroding from a combination of the weather and the de-icers used by the maintenance staff.
Through seminar and educational efforts, the University learned that HDG is a much more durable coating than paint. The architects and the University selected a duplex-system to ensure the corrosion performance and visual appearance were both satisfied. By applying the galvanizing, the fence will be able to withstand the winters and de-icing, and the paint applied after the HDG coating will give the University the desired visual appearance.
