The Grand Terrace High School was built for about $151 million and houses approximately 2,500 students. There are 98 classrooms in the two-story building featuring a performing arts center, sporting facilities and outdoor amphitheater. It is one of four major construction projects in the past two years for the Colton Joint Unified School District. The facility is located on a busy main highway with a high volume of daily traffic which posed a major safety concern for the school district in regards to the students walking back and forth across the street throughout the school year. Multiple solutions were formulated and implemented from building additional paved sidewalks, installing new stop lights and even widening the crosswalks on all adjacent streets. In addition, a hot-dip galvanized pedestrian barrier was installed along the center of main streets large concrete median and an ornamental (zigzag style) galvanized steel fence completely encloses the propertys vast (60-acre) perimeter. This was an all-around concerted effort by the school district to help assure the student body is safe and secure.
The city (Grand Terrace, CA) is a planned community situated between two mountain ridges, the Blue Mountain to the east and La Lorna Hills to the west. The mountain ridges are blessed with aqua blue waterfalls and picturesque running rivers both showcasing lush rolling hillsides covered in beautiful Blue Lupine flowers. It was of paramount importance when designing the fence and median barrier that they would exude a very hip and modern vibe to correlate with the facilitys progressive architectural design, but without taking away from the natural pristine beauty of the surrounding area. This is where hot-dip galvanizing came into the overall equation. The school district viewed hot-dip galvanizing as economical, long-lasting and low maintenance with the added bonus of a timeless, clean, classic finish and truly, a perfect complement for this new distinguished California high school.
