Galvanized collegiate stadiums, especially those in the Big 10 Conference, are increasing in popularity due to the demand for sustainable design. The Soccer Stadium at the University of Michigan is the latest structure chosen to utilize hot-dip galvanized steel.
Since zinc is a 100% recyclable, naturally occurring element, galvanizing is a sustainable process that has little to no effect on the environment. Winters in Michigan can cause harsh environmental conditions for outdoor facilities, which is one of the main reasons galvanized steel was used. The coating that is created during the galvanizing process will safeguard the steel from even the harshest of winter conditions. It also creates a maintenance-free structure due to the fact that no time will have to be spent repairing corroded parts. The natural gray appearance of galvanized steel created a fine looking stadium that will be around for many future University of Michigan soccer fans.
