Located in the heart of Fort Worths Cultural District, the recently completed Equestrian Center at Will Rogers Memorial Center (WRMC) is a first class, state-of-the-art facility that is the new standard in agricultural event arenas. Its location required special attention be paid to its aesthetic appeal, as the surroundings include several museums, a convention center and an entertainment district. In addition, some of the original structures still remain in the WRMC, and all new construction, including the entrance to the John Justin Arena, must blend well with those buildings some dating as far back as 1936.
A duplex coating was selected to coat all structural steel inside the facility, and a standard HDG coating protects all exposed structural steel outside the primarily brick exterior.
The galvanizer went to great pains to handle and dip the cambered archway beam which marks the signature entrance to the building. Furthermore, prior to the unveiling of the Equestrian Center at WRMC, the industry standard for arenas was little more than a metal barn with bleachers. Fort Worth has significantly raised the bar with regards to corrosion protection, aesthetics and spectator/contestant amenities.
A duplex coating was selected to coat all structural steel inside the facility, and a standard HDG coating protects all exposed structural steel outside the primarily brick exterior. This will ensure taxpayers and donors contributions will be utilized as effectively and efficiently as possible by spreading the initial costs of construction over a much longer product life cycle. It will also serve as a blueprint for corrosion protection in competing cities as they begin designing new and improved equestrian centers to rival the WRMC.
An unavoidable by-product in the livestock industry is waste from the animals themselves, which is highly-corrosive due to the ammonia that results, and it poses a major threat to all steel structures. Other coating systems would require frequent and costly maintenance to prevent corrosion, further increasing the financial burden to taxpayers and donors and decreasing the profitability of the Equestrian Center for the city of Fort Worth. Additionally, when repainting is occasionally required, the underlying HDG coating will provide an excellent surface requiring minimal surface preparation.
