The passage of Pennsylvania Act 89 created a long-term funding solution for critical highway and transit infrastructure needs in the state. As a result, this funding allowed the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) to continue its commitment to providing safe, reliable service while enhancing the travel experience for its current and future customers by upgrading, rehabilitating, and replacing critical infrastructure in and around the Philadelphia metropolitan area. So, when officials gathered to announce the Levittown Train Station was going to be rebuilt, the longevity and stability of the hot-dip galvanizing process naturally fit into SEPTA’s adopted model.
Communication between fabricator, galvanizer and painter allowed for smooth coordination; maintaining a steady stream of workflow for the site, thus minimizing any worksite delays.
The original 1950s era William Levitt-built station had been neglected, was out of date, and needed to be rebuilt, especially since the station is the third busiest on SEPTA’s Regional Rail Line. The renovation improves safety and accessibility of station while providing shelter from the weather while passengers wait for their train. The renovations also included an elevator for accessibility, a passenger overpass, high-level platforms and accessible ramps, passenger shelters with canopies, parking lot reconfiguration, and improvements to storm water management, signage and LED lights.
The project presented unique challenges for SEPTA as they constructed the new station. Crews had to time the work and installation of a large pedestrian bridge around the schedule of SEPTA, freight, and Amtrak trains. The work could have easily caused major problems on the Northeast Corridor if things went awry. Communication between fabricator, galvanizer and painter allowed for smooth coordination; maintaining a steady stream of workflow for the site, thus minimizing any worksite delays.
Five years after breaking ground, officials gathered to officially open the Levittown Station. State Representative John Galloway noted that the new train station and redevelopment of the RT 13 corridor in Tullytown represents a rebirth of Levittown.
