This major thoroughfare to the Ohio State University entails the use of 500 tons of hot-dip galvanized embeds, tower columns, guide-wire, guardrail and floor beams. The concrete tower columns of this cable-stayed bridge were designed with an inner core of hot-dip galvanized steel.
The cores weighed an astonishing 44 tons each and are the heaviest steel members ever hot-dip galvanized in one piece. A testament to the galvanizing process and the coordination with the fabricator, the dimensional accuracy of the castellated inner core steel was held to precise specification. Galvanizing was selected because of a terrific previous experience on a major sports stadium and city revitalization project and because the city wanted the bridge to last forever. Not that it can be guaranteed but hot-dip galvanizing will be maintenance free for decades and deliver cost savings to the city not possible from most other corrosion protection systems.
