The Kemah Lighthouse Gazebo is a steel structure dressed in wood siding that presents a traditional, colonial appearance resembling the functioning lighthouses of yester-year. Located in the coastal city of Kemah, TX, it is perpetually exposed to highly-corrosive salt-water mist from the nearby Gulf of Mexico. 

The designers were in search of a protective coating that would be both cost-effective and durable but would also blend with the theme of the surrounding boardwalk area. Because the gazebo is paid for by the taxpayers of Kemah, the city had an obligation to utilize the most long-lasting, high-quality building methods available. By specifying a hot-dip galvanized (HDG) coating on the structural steel, the designers were able to deliver a product that would provide many, many years of maintenance-free enjoyment by tourists as well as the citizens of Kemah. HDG offers alloy layers that provide barrier and cathodic protection from corrosion caused by the constant spray of salt water and the periodic threat of hurricane conditions that would break down a painted coating. Furthermore, zinc is a natural occuring element, which means the nearby marine habitat will not be risked or compromised with the use of a HDG coating.
