The Zip Rider is a popular ride nestled on a high slope in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, located at the popular resort destination Wildcat Mountain Resort. The ride boasts some impressive characteristics, as riders descend 45 mph, 70 feet above ground at the length of 2,100 feet with a vertical drop of 265 feet and 12 percent grade.
Riders reportedly reach their destination at the bottom in 60 seconds. The ride is highly visible due to its popularity during the summer months. The Zip Rider is located in an extreme environment with harsh and severe winters of northeastern New England and very hot and humid summers. With such conditions, the need for protection of the apparatus is imperative. Thus, hot-dip galvanizing was the obvious choice to protect the ride from unsafe and unsightly corrosion. Safety and maintenance are the biggest concerns the resort faces with the ride, resulting in 12.5 tons of structural steel hot-dip galvanized including the towers, braces, and arm stanchions. Having the zip line protected with the hot-dip galvanized coating keeps the maintenance personnel from having one less thing to worry about. Besides keeping the ride looking aesthetically pleasing, using HDG ensures the integrity of the structure will be preserved for decades to come.
