CloseThe triple-chair Dakota Lift at Big Sky Report is located on the south face of Lone Mountain. The Dakota chair, 3,100 feet long, with a vertical rise of 1,210 feet, is the first at the resort chosen to be fully hot-dip galvanized. According to resort representatives, "most lifts require a new paint job every three-to-five years."
This lift, once in another part of the resort, was problematic and required much maintenance to the coating every couple of years. Being exposed to high terrain and severe weather, the lift required the highest corrosion protection possible. To ensure long-lasting durability, and no maintenance, the Big Sky Resort disassembled the entire structure and had it hot-dip galvanized. 54 tons of steel including all columns, lifting frames, access ladders, chairs, and rocker arms were hot-dip galvanized. Once completed, the entire lift went through a complete rebuild with effort to improve the aesthetics of the Dakota Territory and better access to the runs located there. While the resort had other galvanized and partially galvanized parts, the Dakota Lift was the first to receive a complete rebuild with all galvanized parts. The Big Sky Resort is very pleased with the results and enjoy the maintenance-free corrosion protection for many years into the future.
