On the banks of the Flint River and near several industrial facilities, the Genesee County Veterans Memorial exists in a very corrosive environment. Hot-dip galvanized steel was chosen for corrosion protection because of its long track record of durability in abrasive environments.
The strong barrier and cathodic protection of the galvanized coating means the memorial will stand corrosion free for over fifty years. Because the funds for this project came purely from donations, it was important to make sure that the structure would be low maintenance and affordable. A life cycle cost analysis for this structure proved galvanized steel to be the most affordable corrosion protection option over the life of the project. This memorial was created because of many generous contributions, and with the help of galvanized steel, it will be a source of great pride for the community for years to come.
