Subdued Radiance (Lion Sculpture)

Launching undergraduate artist Beth Nybeck into a successful career, the Lion Sculpture stands proudly at the St. Marys hospital in St. Louis. Nybeck specifically wanted the ability to have people participate in her art work by touch. She also wanted the best corrosion protection available so the artwork would not fall apart or degenerate over time. Nybecks professor suggested she try hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) as she believed it was the best coating option.

The lion sculpture contained various pockets inside the structure that could trap air or zinc during the galvanizing process. Nybeck worked closely with the galvanizers to ensure the sculpture would maintain integrity while getting complete coverage. The collaborated efforts produced the desired outcome--the Lion Sculpture is both beautiful and durable. Beth Nybeck noted after experiencing the benefits of HDG, she plans on galvanizing in the future.
