This bridge was originally specified to use weathering steel; however, after researching and discovering some of the disadvantages of the product, the spec was changed to hot-dip galvanized steel. Weathering steel can cause unsightly bleeding onto concrete supports and the surrounding deck, creating an unpleasant aesthetic. Also, it is difficult to assess any new or continuing corrosion that might weaken the structure, because of weathering steels rust-like appearance.
Contrarily, galvanized steel has a pleasing, natural zinc metal finish that blends into the surrounding environment and will never bleed. It is also very easy to inspect using a metallic thickness gauge or even a visual check. Galvanized steel will keep this bridge looking its best and standing rust free for decades to come.
