The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, designed by D.B. Steinman, is one of the countryï¾s longest continuous deck truss bridges. Rehabilitation of the bridge began in 2000, and includes a wider new deck, new deck joints, and safety improvements, all while maintaining both lanes of traffic.
Opened to traffic in 1957, the 7,793 foot bridge spans the Hudson River 90 miles north of New York City. In order to widen the deck while reducing the total deck load, the engineer elected to use an Exodermic Bridge Deck with galvanized reinforcing steel. The Exodermic design used on this project provided the span capacity required and significantly simplified construction details. Lower design stress at welds and punchouts in the grid will provide the bridge a long life. The owner stressed the importance of long-term performance on the project, and thus specified hot-dip galvanized Exodermic deck grid panels and reinforcing steel in the reinforced concrete component of the Exodermic deck. The hot-dip galvanized reinforcing steel within the Exodermic deck will allow the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge to be an admired and functional structure for years to come.
