The abrasive nature of the silica sand, cement, flour, and sugar that the trucks carried rendered paint useless as a corrosion prevention system, and customers complained that repainting the trailer frames each year was costly and time-consuming. 

Stephens turned to hot-dip galvanizing as the corrosion solution for the front and rear frames, as well as for the struts that stabilize the bulk tanks. Hot-dip galvanized steel eliminated the cost of repainting each year, and the resulting finish blends well with the bright aluminum tank body. Stephens' customers now report that they have zero problems with corrosion, even with the road salts encountered in Northern winters. Stephens is so convinced that hot-dip galvanizing gives them a marketing advantage that a design change was initiated from welded fender brackets to bolted connections that improve the quality and appearance of the zinc coating.
