The MBTA has had a long standing policy of providing initial quality to minimize future maintenance and obsolesence. Their familiarity with hot dip galvanizing and galvanizer applied coatings, particularly in areas that could not easily be accessed, was a major factor in the decision to specify the process.
The structural steel components in the Beverly Station garage, are located in areas that would require station shut-down and costly remediation if refurbishment was to be required.
The application of a safety yellow visibility strip on the stairs and a safety yellow coating on the bollards and bumper rail were another advantages of specifying the process.
