The priorities for construction of Mommoet's new corporate office were to be on time, under budget and accident free. The building was conceived by a collaboration of suppliers all agreeing that value-engineering was necessary for completion of the project. The cost effectiveness of HDG, both initially and as evaluated according to the life-cycle cost of the project, made HDG a "no brainer," reported the project coordinator. Since the building would be replacing the existing corporate office, Mammoet had to consider the indirect cost of inconvenience to corporate office employees as well as their safety in a construction zone. Construction would take place offsite, and the building would be moved to its permanent location. Corporate operations would be able to continue with no loss of time (a tremendous savings for the project), and the possibility of completion ahead of schedule. HDG made the specifying easy with ASTM A123 for the galvanized portions of the project. While Mammoet had moved small historic buildings in Europe, this was a first for the US market; moving a 1,100 ton building, completely furnished, with a cafeteria, fitness center, doors, windows and decorations, all in place. The project coordinator said, "We wanted to leave a legacy and we love a challenge." The sustainability of HDG insures the steel will be protected for this building and all the ones to follow.
The corrosion resistance of HDG is essential for the maintenance-free requirement needed for LEED certification.
Because the HDG coating is harder than the steel itself, it could provide the abrasion resistance and durability needed for the extensive abuse associated with the lift and actual move of the building on four self-propelled modular transporters. The building was stabilized as much as possible as it made the 1/4 mile trip, including a 90 degree turn and a downhill slope to its final destination. There was a sigh of relief as the 19,321 sq. ft., two-story building was lowered onto the preplaced piers and securely attached to the galvanized anchor bolts.
The galvanized structure will be subjected to hurricane force winds, coastal area humidity, salt water and gumbo black-land soil used for back-fill. Since there is little room for crawlspace under the building, the corrosion resistance of HDG is essential for the maintenance-free requirement needed for LEED certification. The W-32 heavy beams, all bracing, and stairs will enjoy 50- 75 years of maintenance-free protection as they provide the sustainability for value-engineering.
The move was performed in the presence of business associates and clients around the world, including the Discovery Channel, who chronicled the event for a documentary film.
