Soaring Eagle Zip Line

This structure is located on a mountain at Heavenly Ski Resort, South Lake Tahoe that sustains heavy winds, snow, and ice. Material durability was a concern, therefore coating durability was important for structure service life to meet specifications.
Since many pipes and tubes were used in the manufacture of the structure, hot-dip galvanizing was the most effective option to protect all the internal surfaces of the pipes and tubes from corrosion. The alternative, capping the open ends, would not have been as effective against corrosion nor as cost effective.
Due to the structures large part size, hot-dip galvanizing was the obvious specification. The ease of galvanizing these very large steel members was in stark contrast to the alternatives: painting or electroplating.
Because of the size and remote location of the structure, it was important for the initial corrosion coating have a longer life as touch ups would be difficult.
