Grey Road Bridge over Never Sink River

The state of New York, and particularly Sullivan County are known for specifying hot-dip galvanizing in most of their bridge construction and rehabilitations. With spans as large as 84 feet, more than 250 tons of steel were galvanized for this bridge. Overlooking the Never Sink River in Fallsburg, the Sullivan County Bridge #293 now boasts a new bridge directly next to the historic steel and wood suspension bridge built in the 1800s. Sullivan county engineers have reconstructed and repaired many bridges over that last decade, and are experienced in the benefits of using hot-dip galvanized steel.

Galvanized steel was chosen both for its coating durability and its minimal impact on the environment.

It was important to the county to construct the bridge with long-span beams in order to protect the environmentally sensitive Never Sink River, known historically as the birthplace of fly fishing and used by trout fisherman around the country. The galvanized coating was applied off-site and future maintenance on the coating is not necessary, which would not have been the case if the bridge had been painted.
