"I believe they painted the southbound side of the bridge and galvanized the northbound side for research purposes," says Indiana DOT's Jim Mickler. After over 41 years of service, the original hot-dip galvanized coating still exceeds ASTM 123 requirements for newly HDG steel. The painted side was repainted after 14 years and then metalized in 2002. The research was essentially over with the first repainting.
