The Broadway Bridge carries substantial vehicular and pedestrian traffic daily. The steel railing sections on the bridge, stairs, and river walkways were galvanized because of the superior corrosion protection.
The railings will be subjected to a very corrosive environment in the Michigan climate, including repeated salt applications to the road. To enhance the corrosion protection and aesthetic appeal, the railings were painted after galvanizing. Only a minor amount of extra work was required to prepare the railings for the paint system, but the increase in corrosion protection is significant. The duplex system will provide the automobile and foot traffic a corrosion-free railing for years to come.
