Autocar, a manufacturer of yard service tow motors/trucks, was asked by their customer base to review their current designs and propose options for enhanced corrosion protection. Hot-dip galvanizing was determined to be the best available means of protection. In May 2015, a seminar was held to introduce the basics of the hot-dip galvanizing process and review the design modifications necessary to incorporate hot-dip galvanizing into their product offering.
Utilizing a duplex system, Autocar is able to provide a consistent aesthetically appealing finish, in addition to an added layer of barrier protection.
Engineering representatives from Autocar worked with the galvanizer during sample runs of parts, evaluating each step of the galvanizing process and changes required to successfully dip their parts. The galvanizing team worked through the changes with steady communication between the engineers and the source suppliers in Mexico. Due to the complex design and moving parts of the chassis, the galvanizer had to make modifications to their standard production process to ensure a quality finished product. Masking techniques were utilized in areas that would require welding after the dip process. Working together with the galvanizer, Autocar was able to incorporate all required modifications and successfully complete the first production run of 12 chassis in December 2015.
Autocar took the corrosion protection one step further by applying a powder coat finish to the hot-dip galvanized chassis. Utilizing a duplex system, Autocar is able to provide a consistent aesthetically appealing finish, in addition to an added layer of barrier protection. Autocar is proud to be a leader in their industry, introducing a duplex coated chassis to their market.
