Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)
The newest technology in immediate information for highway drivers is the Intelligent Transportation System. Controlled by satellite, these 16 electronic billboards are located throughout Michigan. Terrorist threats, changing weather updates and traffic conditions can be immediately sent to the billboards for direct contact with the public. Knowing that all eyes will be on these billboards, and knowing that maintenance funds are limited, the DOT decided that hot dip galvanizing was the most durable and sustainable corrosion protection for these innovative structures.
The driving public will regularly view the structures for updates. Thousands of drivers will see these signs in the high traffic areas.
As these are the first high-tech billboards for public information, the choice for galvanizing will continue on future billboards. Commercial billboards could follow suit when they find the low maintenance coating could benefit their customers.
The combination of satellite technology, immediate information systems, and the tried-and-true corrosion projection of hot dip galvanizing joined together to make highway safety and security better than ever.
