One hundred percent of the steel (60 tons/54 tonnes) was hot-dip galvanized, including 42 ft. (12 m) torque tubes, end caps, support brackets, joist splice plates, weldments, angle braces, rebound columns, and roof verticals and diagonals. Standard rectangular box floating dock systems will twist and buckle, particularly if frozen in position at one water level.
The torque tube design transfers the load throughout the tube, allowing the dock to extend 100 feet (30.5 m) and be suspended 5 feet (1.5 m) out of water without buckling. The design was equipped with wave attenuators to dampen wave movement. The roofs are designed to building codes to allow for snow and ice build-up. Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for this unique dock system to minimize and/or eliminate future assessments and dues allocations for repair and maintenance of the dock system; to blend with the surroundings and be less obtrusive than a painted system; to withstand the freeze and thaw weather cycles; to prevent any unsightly drips or rust stains historically left on many of the large, expensive boats and previous dock system.
