All of the pipe piling and structural steel of the Port of Edmunds was galvanized in the summer of 1997. Due to the challenging size of some of the pieces and the short construction timeline, the project required a close, collaborative effort among engineer, fabricator, and galvanizer to ensure success.
Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for its superior corrosion protection in the aggressive marine environment.
Hot-dip galvanizing was chosen for its superior corrosion protection in the aggressive marine environment. Additionally, hot-dip galvanized steel was specified because the expectation for this renovations was something that would be around for decades of water lovers to enjoy.
In October 2007, the Port of Edmonds was inspected to see the overall condition and performance of the galvanized pieces after 10 years. The visual inspection revealed the overall appearance of the galvanized pieces was very good, and there was no evidence of excessive corrosion. Coating thickness measurements were taken from five different points on the structure, including pilings, poles, and columns. The average of the readings suggests the galvanized pieces will continue to provide corrosion protection of the Port of Edmonds for another 50 years or more.
