Forty tons (36 tonnes) of steel piles - float-stops, fabricated steel connections between concrete piles and timber pile caps, and guard rails - were hot-dip galvanized to ensure that this transient moorage facility has a long, lifespan in the corrosive marine environment. The design successfully provides a stable walking platform, while accommodating wave induced motions, dynamic pedestrian and wheelchair loading, and a full range of tidal variation.
Hot-dip galvanizing the steel piles was specified not only for durable protection, but also for low environmental impact.
The use of float-stops for the intermediate landings ensures that gangways are fully ADA-compliant. To meet ADA requirements, float-stops were utilized on hot-dip galvanized steel piles. These float stops were constructed out of hollow structural steel and wide flange sections to provide the highest level of corrosion resistance in this abrasive marine environment. Hot-dip galvanizing the steel piles was specified not only for durable protection, but also for low environmental impact.
