The choices for the construction of boat docks are wood, aluminum or steel. Wood fabrication will eventually weather and deteriorate at a rapid rate, and the initial costs of aluminum construction are very expensive.
Therefore, steel construction of marine boat docks is most commonly chosen. Since steel is continually corroding, a protective coating of zinc or paint is greatly beneficial in increasing the sustainability of a steel erected boat dock. Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) has several advantages over painting steel including: providing a longer life-cycle, reducing follow-up maintenance labor and costs, and significantly lowering special handling practices required with painting. Accordingly, HDG is the superior choice for coating the steel of fabricated boat docks and provides a long lasting barrier of protection in a marine climate.
