Los Angeles is a city known for famous people and famous attractions. The Timber Mountain Slide at the Los Angeles County Fairplex has definitively earned a place on that ever growing list. This miracle of modern engineering is the creation of Ray Cammack Shows, Inc., an industry leader in carnival entertainment since 1963. The slide itself is built into the side of a picnic hill (taking advantage of its natural incline) and is a permanent structure at the Fairplex.
Hot-dip galvanizing was one of the primary reasons they were able to get such an extraordinary service life out of this former attraction.
After weeks of construction and multiple safety inspections, the slide was ready to ride on the inaugural day of the 2012 Los Angeles County Fair. Guests climb 94 steps to get to the top, then, while seated on a traditional burlap sack, they ride down the hair-raising 130 foot-long slide with a 42 foot vertical drop of humps and valleys. The look of joy and delight is unmistakable on the faces of the guests as they reach the bottom.
The slide replaces one of similar size that was torn down in 2010 after an incredible 50-year run. Hot-dip galvanizing was one of the primary reasons they were able to get such an extraordinary service life out of this former attraction. Because of this, the bar is set high and a similar return on investment is expected for the new attraction.
Hot-dip galvanizing would be called into service (once again) protecting not only the slides foundational support columns from constantly being exposed to the unforgiving coastal environment, but also to protect the massive main steel surface panels from the wear and tear of patrons (on abrasive burlap sacks) sliding down the ride. Because it is economical, with little to no maintenance and an indisputable proven track record, hot-dip galvanizing will help to ensure thousands of visitors each year will experience this thrilling, show-piece attraction.
