The Ron Venderly Family Pedestrian Bridge provides a vital link between the main and west campuses of Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. The $4.2 million pedestrian bridge provides a new way for joggers, walkers, cyclists, and other users to cross the St. Joseph River. By meeting the specifications of ASTM 123, the bridge easily reaches a life expectancy of over 75 years. The durable zinc coating created during the galvanizing process will protect the structure from unsafe and unsightly corrosion, maintenance-free for that duration.

The recyclability of HDG steel was another important issue in the project, as well as achieving a smooth finish on the handrails. Because of its 100% recyclability, HDG steel played a major role in meeting the environmentally friendly goals of IPFW and also made the St. Joseph River part of the River Greenway System. The painted duplex coating of the bridge ensurse a life-cycle 1.5 times longer when combine with the benefits of galvanized steel, meaning the bridge will remain standing, maintenance-free, for years to come.
