The Talbot Substation, located in the far eastern reaches of Washington state, supplies electrical utilities for the region. Because of the structures exposure to the elements, hot-dip galvanizing was chosen to protect the substation from corrosion. By doing so, the substation will not have costly downtime issues or maintenance repairs. Once a substation is energized, it is extremely difficult to service repairs on due to the dangers of electricity flowing through the conductors. The reasons for hot-dip galvanizing the structure include previous HDG experience, cost savings involved, and durability. In all, 47 tons of steel were hot-dipped, included all structural steel, fasteners, anchor bolts, concrete embeds, bollards, light fixture mounting brackets, and all switch operator grounding platforms. Other items were coated as well: switch bases, controls, electrical raceway channels, stranded cables, and all fencing around the station. By using HDG for corrosion protection, the substation will enjoy years of maintenance-free operations.
