The car canopy at this Sonic fast food drive-in is a staple of American culture. Their signature "carport" look was recently updated in Galveston, Texas, located directly on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Due to its close proximity to the ocean, the structure had to be repainted almost yearly because of the salt and sea spray corroding the steel.
To combat this problem, the Sonic Corporation was willing to test this facility with hot-dip galvanizing and use the painted duplex system to protect the steel from unsightly corrosion and maintenance costs due to the issues of painting and re-painting. This test represents a possible "new market" for the galvanizers - if successful, the project will have a great impact on not only the Sonic Corporation, but potentially the entire fast food retail market. The success of this facility with corrosion protection would develop a new standard for use at every Sonic drive-in location. The visual appearance not only ensures a clean, modern look, it also prevents Sonic from having to deal with costly durability issues. This allows the corporation (and potentially others) to refurbish and update the appearance of individual stores with a look of times past to expose steel to the elements. By using HDG, the Sonic will enjoy long-lasting corrosion protection for years to come.
