The Hyatt Regency, located at the Chicagos OHare International Airport, boasts an ultra-modern and sophisticated look at its main entrance. A cantilever canopy system, complete with huge imported Italian glass pieces and stainless steel strand wires, is held up by large structural supports that provide a welcome, open air feeling as well as protection from harsh weather.
The canopy is highly visible, so the pieces were hot-dip galvanized to eliminate any maintenance or corrosion issues. The durable and long-lasting coating was necessary, as any corrosion would be visible through the clear glass canopy. The galvanizing process was difficult because of the massive size and asymmetrical design of the structure. To combat the oversize nature of the pieces, the galvanizing facility used a progressive dip system to thoroughly coat all the pieces.
In addition, proper vent and drain hole positioning proved to be difficult because of the size and shape. Close collaboration between the fabricator and the galvanizers was necessary to ensure the vent/ drain holes were located and positioned correctly. In doing so, the pieces were completely galvanized from the inside out, and will provide decades of maintenance free corrosion protection.
