California is no stranger to devastation caused by unavoidable catastrophic events and Silver Oak Winery is all too familiar with the destruction the monstrous fires can cause. In 2006, their Oakville winery became another victim of these events.
Instead of simply rebuilding the winery back to its original state, Silver Oak took it a giant step further, using this LEED® Platinum experience in later creating the Alexander Valley Winery. The 70 acres of estate vineyards displays design and modernization by utilizing alternative energy source, water reuse systems and reclaimed building materials. Silver Oak's determination to have little to no carbon footprint on the environment was achieved through galvanized supports and solar panels throughout their vineyards.
More than 60,000 pounds of galvanized steel support the vineyards daily needs. Solar panel energy powers behind the scenes of the business while the sun's direct energy feeds the vineyards to provide for the impeccable wine flavor through the harvest season. LEED® Platinum was achieved in the building of this winery in the framework of their business, operating using less energy, less waste and supporting human health.
Alexander Valley also challenged themselves with the Living Building Challenge by functioning cleanly and continuously tasked to be running more efficiently – producing more energy than they consume. Thanks to the reliability of hot-dip galvanized steel, which supports the solar panel structure, the winery will be able to continue this efficiency for years to come.
