This is Olin Chemical's first use of galvanizing for corrosion protection of their chlorine dryers. Galvanizing was selected for its durability and ability to resist abrasion. These characteristics make galvanizing well suited for use as a corrosion protection coating. The galvanized coating can be likened to a buffer stop.
The soft outer layer of pure zinc absorbs much of the shock on initial impact, and then the underlying iron-zinc alloys, which are harder than mild steel, prevent or greatly reduce the penetration of the coating and exposure of bare steel. The toughness of the galvanized coating makes it very suitable in applications where abrasion could be a problem in assembly or use.
