CloseThough DOW Chemical has long had a policy that all steel in their facilities is to be hot-dip galvanized, for a recent project, the company opted to give a paint corrosion protection system a try. In the chemical plants, the harsh, corrosive environment proved too caustic for painted surfaces, which quickly began to peel and rust.
Experiencing such poor results with paint led the company to specify the tried and true durability of hot-dip galvanized steel for their newest project, the Harbor Beach chemical plant. Though some of the pieces were odd in size and difficult to manage, the galvanizer took the time to ensure the pieces would receive a quality zinc coating. The resulting 25 tons of beams, channels, and angles will provide, durable, maintenance-free corrosion protection for 50+ years - no repetitive touch-ups, peeling, or structurally dangerous corrosion.
DOW desired a structure that would have a long-life, and hot-dip galvanized steel will keep the facility strong in the face of corrosive chemicals and the rough industrial environment. With the proven success of their hot-dip galvanized facilities, galvanized steel was the automatic choice for the next stages of the project - and will continue to be the choice of DOW Chemical in the future. No other coating was able to provide the maintenance-free durability to protect their investment and keep production running smoothly.
