The scoreboard at Jones AT&T Stadium was due for a facelift so the Texas Tech Board of Regents decided to construct a super structure at the north end zone of the field. The structure would house a state of the art video board and sound system that would rank as the largest in the Big 12 conference.
The specifers chose hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) for its superior corrosion performance and durability. Corrosion control was important because the structure had to remain stable, rigid, and able to endure the vibrations of 60,000+ fans cheering the Red Raiders to victory. Maintenance would be difficult as well as costly. The heavy duty structure was firmly planted on HDG embeds supporting the 190ft X 57ft structure. The initial cost of HDG for the project was competitive, but the life-cycle cost proved it to be the answer for true sustainability for this long-term project. The structure was built in a dry climate but creatively designed like it was on the coast. The architect called HDG a win, win for their confidence level that the structure was protected.
