Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in the history of the United States. This joint venture of Canadian and American developers is characterized by more than 17 million square feet of rental space including many state-of-the-art high-rise towers at a total cost of over $20 billion. The development of Hudson Yards will create more than 23,000 construction jobs over the next 8 years.
The construction of the first high-rise tower (10 Hudson Yards) was topped by a 900 ton crown of galvanized steel.
With hot-dip galvanizing participation in private building projects historically lagging well behind that of public projects Hudson Yards is an opportunity to demonstrate to the specifying community the powerful business case of galvanizing for corrosion protection both short and long term.
The construction of the first high-rise tower (10 Hudson Yards) was topped by a 900 ton crown of galvanized steel. This crown creates the dramatic shape of the top of the tower while concealing all of the necessary mechanical systems such as HVAC units, elevator mechanisms, exterior washing devises etc.
Careful coordination by the fabricator and galvanizer insured carefully packaged and precisely timed deliveries directly to the incredibly congested work site for immediate installation. Exceptional quality control measures insured that the sky high installation went quickly and flawlessly.
The excellent on-site construction performance of the hot-dipped steel allayed the concerns of the engineers who all too often fear that installation problems (including late, mixed or poorly bundled steel along with quality issues such as excess zinc deposits and damages) outweigh the outstanding cost to benefit performance of hot-dip galvanizing over the long haul.
This trouble-free performance (as with our equally strong performance for the spire of the Freedom Tower) bodes well for future use of HDG steel in this and other development projects in the New York City area.
