During the summer of 2014, Hornbeck Offshore Services (HOS), worked to have the major support steel for an octagon shaped helipad hot dip galvanized. The 73' diameter (84'2 w/safety nets) helipad was installed on the Offshore Supply/Multi-Purpose Support Vessel "HOS Bayou". This particular vessel is 302' long, 5,600 Deadweight LT's with a 6,700 horsepower rating and a maximum speed of 12 knots. It will service offshore drilling/production platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
The galvanized steel for this project utilized 3 - W36 x 302 beams measuring 65.25' in length with 4 shorter cross membersx of the same weight. Next, 6, 16" diameter pipe columns tied this steel to the hull of the ship. All hot dip galvanized steel was painted after galvanizing for additional corrosion protection in the harsh saltwater environment presented by the offshore oil environment. All told, there were 50 tons of wide flange beams, pipe and net frames hot-dip galvanized for this project.
Installation took place at Conrad Deepwater Shipyard in Amelia, Louisiana. Total completion time was 8 months including 4 months of engineering.
