Visual appearance form this project was extremely important. The trail is in a major city with four large colleges it is used for recreation by many people every day. Special handling was needed to transport the railings to ensure no knicks or marks were created. Sections were to be placed by helicopter, but weather downed two attempts.
To meet schedules, barges and cranes were brought in. The durability of the product lent itself to the situation, performing nicely where mere paint would have failed. With the construction season being short and outdoor applications of paint being restricted to good weather (maximum four months in New York), factory application of hot-dip galvanizing and powder coat fit perfectly and was ahead of schedule. Galvanizing plus powder coating creates an extremely durable and aesthetically pleasing product for years to come. The architects for this project were thoroughly educated by the AGA Galvanize It! program.
With a location along wetlands and a harsh city environment, the corrosion protection coating needed to withstand a wide range of environmental conditions. The trail is fifteen miles along the Genesee River through the City of Rochester, NY. With the increasing interest in better health by walking and biking, there is a lot of room for growth in other metropolitan areas for trails, nature paths, and walkways.
